Agent Substrate terms

atespace Substrate
An atespace is the global Substrate isolation boundary an Actor belongs to; an Actor is addressed by atespace and name, and atespaces are separate from Kubernetes namespaces. 20 ax uses an atespace named default unless you pass --atespace.1
Actor Substrate
An Actor is a single sandboxed instance derived from an ActorTemplate; it is the unit that Substrate suspends, resumes, and moves between workers, and both ax Tasks and kagent agents run as Actors.20
WorkerPool Substrate
A WorkerPool is a Kubernetes CRD that declares warm compute capacity as a fleet of pre-started worker pods, which atecontroller reconciles into a Deployment; worker nodes need the ate.dev/substrate-version label.2012
ActorTemplate Substrate
An ActorTemplate is the immutable definition of an actor class, naming its container images and snapshot configuration; it is stored in the Substrate control-plane database, not as a Kubernetes object, and creating one triggers a golden snapshot.20
snapshot Substrate
A snapshot is a checkpoint of an Actor kept in object storage (GCS or S3); the golden snapshot is captured once per ActorTemplate, and the last snapshot is written on each suspend.20
DurableDir Substrate
A DurableDir is a volume mounted into an Actor's containers whose contents survive suspend and resume independently of process memory; it is the per-Actor application-data surface.20
atenet Substrate
atenet is the Substrate networking stack, whose router resumes suspended Actors on demand and routes traffic to the right worker pod.20

ax terms

Task ax
A Task is one unit of work that ax runs in a sandbox; its phases include Running, Suspended, Failed, and Terminating, and the list is not exhaustive.3
Workspace ax
A Workspace is the prepared filesystem mounted into a Task, with a WorkspaceReady condition that gates the Task.3
Model ax
A Model is the ax resource that names an LLM provider and its credentials; the docs cover google and anthropic.3
goal ax
The goal is the natural-language field on a Task's workspace binding, Task.spec.workspaces[].goal, that ax hands to Antigravity to prepare the Workspace on first run, with a 10-minute default limit set by AX_BOOTSTRAP_TIMEOUT; a Workspace itself has no goal field.45
ax-task-runner ax
ax-task-runner is PID 1 in every ax sandbox; it serves the metadata server on port 80, reports /readyz 503 until the Workspace is ready, and stays up after the command exits.5
Antigravity ax
Antigravity is Google's coding agent, bundled in the ax runner, which works towards a workspace binding's goal using GEMINI_API_KEY.5
guest services ax
Guest services are the debugging services inside an ax sandbox, such as the one behind ax ssh, which run only when the Task sets spec.debug: true.5

kagent terms

Harness kagent
A Harness is the kagent resource that selects the agent runtime (Go ADK, Python ADK, Codex, Claude, or custom) and its settings, including context compaction in the 1.x line.8
AgentTemplate kagent
An AgentTemplate is the kagent resource that describes an agent's prompt, tools, and model, independent of the runtime that executes it.9
Agent kagent
At v1.0.0-alpha6, an Agent is the CRD in api.kagent.dev/v1alpha3 that binds one AgentTemplate (template or templateRef) to one Harness (harness or harnessRef) and reports revision status and conditions.23
ModelConfig kagent
A ModelConfig is the kagent resource that names a model provider and its credentials; at alpha6 the provider enum is Anthropic, OpenAI, AzureOpenAI, Ollama, Gemini, GeminiVertexAI, AnthropicVertexAI, Bedrock, SAPAICore, Foundry, and Mistral.22
RemoteMCPServer kagent
A RemoteMCPServer is the kagent resource that registers an external MCP server so several agents can share its tools.8
revision kagent
A revision is a numbered generation of an Agent's resolved configuration; the Agent status reports desiredRevision and latestSuccessfulRevision.23
Session kagent
A Session is one conversation with an Agent: PostgreSQL-backed control-plane state exposed through gRPC, created from an Agent, and not a Kubernetes resource.10 The kagent.dev 1.x docs still describe v1.0.0-alpha4, where this object was called AgentInstance; at alpha6 the name is Session.11
kagent-dev/substrate kagent
kagent-dev/substrate is kagent's fork of Agent Substrate; kagent v1.0.0-alpha6 builds against the fork at v0.3.0-alpha3 instead of the upstream agent-substrate/substrate module that ax v0.3.1 requires.3033
checkpoint kagent
A checkpoint is a saved point in a Session that the conversation can be restored to.9
fork kagent
A fork is a new Session started from a checkpoint of an existing Session, leaving the original unchanged.9
TaskStore kagent
The TaskStore is the private persistence API that kagent runtime SDKs use to create, update, and list the A2A tasks of a Session in the control-plane database.24

Protocols

A2A kagent
A2A (Agent2Agent) is the protocol agents use to call other agents; kagent serves it on controller port 8083.10
MCP kagent
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the protocol that exposes tools to agents; kagent both serves MCP on port 8083 and consumes tools from MCP servers.10
