Akuru notes

Three findings that apply to Akuru's EKS clusters, with the verdict and evidence for each.

F1: Substrate needs beta certificate APIs that EKS does not serve

Verdict: Valid Substrate v0.3.0 requires two Kubernetes beta APIs, certificates.k8s.io/v1beta1/podcertificaterequests and certificates.k8s.io/v1beta1/clustertrustbundles, and its client code calls the v1beta1 ClusterTrustBundles API directly.13 Kubernetes made both APIs stable and enabled by default only in v1.37; in 1.36 they were beta and off by default.14 EKS states that "New beta APIs aren't enabled in clusters by default", offers no switch to enable them, and lists 1.36 as its newest version.15

kagent 1.x and ax both depend on Substrate, so this blocks both on Akuru's EKS clusters today: EKS 1.36 is the newest EKS version, and on 1.36 the two v1beta1 APIs are off by default with no EKS switch to turn them on.8115 Substrate's GKE guide says v0.3.0 works on 1.37 or later without beta enablement, because the APIs are served by default there.13 Whether EKS 1.37 will serve the v1beta1 APIs that v0.3.0 calls is not documented, so re-check when EKS 1.37 ships. kagent v1.0.0-alpha6 builds against the kagent-dev/substrate fork at v0.3.0-alpha3 rather than upstream v0.3.0, so re-check that fork too.30

F2: Akuru runs kagent 0.x under Stockyard

Internal team knowledge Akuru runs kagent 0.x on internal-eks-001 under Stockyard, and Stockyard owns the Agent resources there. This is recorded team knowledge, not an externally verifiable fact.

kagent 0.x runs agents as Deployments by default, with Substrate only as an opt-in SandboxAgent path, while 1.0 makes Substrate mandatory.8 Moving that deployment to either Substrate-based platform is therefore a re-architecture rather than an upgrade, and it is blocked by F1.

F3: The kagent 0.10 Go runtime ignores context compaction

Verdict: Valid Since 0.10.0 the default declarative runtime is Go, and the Go runtime never read spec.declarative.context.compaction; only the Python runtime honoured it.19 The fix, commit 7471879 (#2790), is contained in v1.0.0-alpha6 but not in v0.10.2, and in the 1.x line compaction is configured on the Harness.19

An Akuru 0.x agent that configures compaction is likely running without it unless it pins runtime: python. Getting the fix through an upgrade requires the 1.x line, which runs into F1.

Re-checking these findings

F1 and F3 were checked against the pinned sources on 2026-10-01 AEST. Before any planning decision, re-check F1 against the current Substrate release and the EKS version list, because Substrate shipped three minor releases in the three weeks before that date.18 Return to Decide once you have done so.
